Haunts - Holiday Trips, Colorado, USA.

Back

Well what a fantastic opportunity!  Here in the Colorado Mountains there are many resorts to visit.  We recommend to anybody wanting to holiday here to hire a car.  We know that after 7 to 10 hours of flying the last thing you want to do is drive, especially if there are bad weather conditions!  But, I must say, once you have the car you will use it to go shopping and visit other resorts.  Below are some resorts and day trips we have been on and recommend to you.  The boredom factor is how long we reckon it would take you to get fed up of the area, should you be planning a long holiday.

Winter Park Berthoud Pass Vail Blue Sky Basin

Arapaho Basin Keystone Beaver Creek Aspen (Snowmass)

Next Year 2001/2002

Winter Park - Recommendation - Holiday
The closest resort to Denver.  Fantastic for skiers with disabilities, but we found it to be a very challenging area with lots and lots of moguls.
Boredom Factor - 4 weeks

Berthoud Pass - Recommendation - Day Trip

On the way up to winter park.  Helicopter skiing with out the Helicopter.  Be prepared for a long hike for those untouched areas, and always take a buddy, and avalanche beacons.  Very challenging, but lots of powder.  More than a day could get boring.  Don't eat at the pub on the mountain, the food is diabolical.
Boredom Factor - 5 days

Vail - Recommendation - Holiday
We think that Vail is the best ski area that we have skied in Colorado.  It has everything for all types of skiers, the 3 valleys all in one area.  Vast skiing with everything from trees to open wide ski areas.  Too much to do in a day but great for a holiday.
Boredom Factor - Never!

Blue Sky Basin - Recommendation - Day Trip
Part of Vail but the extreme part, with cliff drops and trees, powder and lots of lips for those fantastic kickers.  This is a new area to the mountain, developing constantly with a new lift added only last season (1999/2000).  Opened two seasons ago (1998/1999) by John Claude Van-Damme.
Boredom Factor - 2 weeks

Arapaho Basin - Recommendation - Day Trip
This resort is open until the 4th of July.  Wide open bowl, just as the name suggests. A large basin in the Arapaho national forest.  Quite a limited ski area in our opinion, and quite boring after a full day.
Boredom Factor - 1 day

Keystone - Recommendation - Holiday

A great ski area.  The outback is very challenging.  We found it quite hard to find our way around, but thoroughly enjoyed the day.  There is a fantastic hotel close by with a large steam room and outdoor pool.  We had a great day there, but needed more time.
Boredom Factor - 6 weeks

Beaver Creek - Recommendation - Holiday

A good ski area close by to Vail, but with 3 areas to ski in.  It is supposed to be the new up and coming Aspen.  We found it quite expensive, but a great ski area with escalators to the main lifts and ski guides everywhere.  Wide and open, nice to ski by and view all the expensive properties for when you win the lottery.
Boredom Factor - 3 months

Aspen (Snowmass) - Recommendation - Holiday

Fantastic ski area.  Three mountains in close proximity of each other.  The bus service is quite good, running between all three mountains.  Excellent long trails / runs, some with hikes.  Be aware that one of the mountains doesn't allow snowboarders.  The expense thing is not to be put to one side - Aspen caters for all pockets.
Boredom Factor - Never!

Not Skied Yet - But will this season 2001/2002

Breckenbridge - Steamboat & Loveland
